Svenska kraftnät ends the Hansa PowerBridge project after the government's rejection

On 13 June 2024, the government decided to reject Svenska kraftnät's application for a concession for the Hansa PowerBridge project. With this, Svenska kraftnät has now decided to end the project.

In the government's decision, it is clear that the refusal does not mean a ban on a new connection between Germany and Sweden should the conditions change in the future. Socioeconomically, Svenska kraftnät sees great benefits from a new electricity connection to Germany in the future. It is about a strengthened integration of the European electricity market, security of supply and increased robustness. But the government has weighed in other aspects, including an increased risk of rising prices in especially southern Sweden. As the government is the last instance in the concession review, Svenska kraftnät will therefore end the project as the conditions for a concession are lacking.
