A more secure supply of electricity in Western Götaland

We are planning a new line between Trollhättan and Lerum in order to secure electricity supply in Västra Götaland. The line also makes it possible to expand wind power and widen the bottleneck that currently restricts imports and exports of electricity between Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

About Skogssäter – Stenkullen

We are planning to strengthen the grid with a new line between Skogssäter in Trollhättan municipality and Stenkullen in Lerum municipality. The new line is needed to ensure that regional networks are not overloaded in case of an error in the grid. An overload on a regional network can cause long and significant power outages. The line is also needed to take care of new wind power in the region and to widen the bottleneck in the network that currently restricts imports and exports of electricity between Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

We need to strengthen the grid to ensure that electricity is always delivered

With a new line between Skogssäter and Stenkullen Svenska kraftnät strengthens the grid in Västra Götaland and ensures that electricity is always delivered, even in case of an error somewhere in the grid. Today there are too few alternative routes for the electricity to take, which means there is a risk of overloading the regional networks. This can lead to large and long power outages that may affect important societal functions. To create more routes for electricity is also important for us to be able to renew old lines in the area.

The line makes it possible to take care of the region's new wind power

The new line is also needed to take care of new wind power planned in Dalsland, Bohuslän and Västra Götaland. When the new line is built between Skogssäter and Stenkullen we will be able to transport the new wind power. It is part of our mandate from the government to enable the connection of renewable energy production to the grid.

The line counteracts a bottleneck in the trade of electricity between Denmark and Norway

One of Sweden's commitments in the EU is to contribute to producing favorable conditions for electricity trade among member countries. That is another reason for needing to reinforce the grid between Skogssäter and Stenkullen, since this part of the grid is so weak that even in the normal mode it limits the possibility of electricity trading with southern Norway and Denmark. Under EU rules, it is not permissible that internal weaknesses somewhere in a country's national grid have consequences for the free flow of commerce between countries. The new line is required for being able to meet today's electricity trading without physical limitations, so-called bottlenecks.

The proposed line will extend from Trollhättan and Lerum

The new line is planned between the subtations Skogssäter in Trollhättan municipality and Stenkullen in Lerum municipality. This is a distance of approximately 74 km. The line will be built in the form of an overhead AC line – the same technology as the rest of the grid is based on. We plan to take the line into operation in 2021.

Facts about Skogssäter - Stenkullen

A new line in is needed in the power grid between Skogssäter in Trollhättan municipality and Stenkullen in Lerum municipality in order to:

  • ensure that regional networks are not overloaded in case of an error in the grid and cause significant power outages
  • to transport new wind power from the region
  • widen the bottleneck in the network that currently restricts imports and exports of electricity between Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
