A more secure supply of electricity in Western Götaland

We are planning a new line between Ale municipality and Stenkullen in Lerum municipality in order to secure electricity supply in Västra Götaland. The line also makes it possible to expand wind power and widen the bottleneck that currently restricts imports and exports of electricity between Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

About Ingelkärr – Stenkullen

We are planning to strengthen the grid with a new line between Ingelkärr in Ale municipality and Stenkullen in Lerum municipality. The line is needed to to widen the bottleneck in the network that currently restricts imports and exports of electricity between Sweden, Norway and Denmark and to increase the transmission capacity in the Gothenburg area.

The line counteracts a bottleneck in the trade of electricity between Denmark and Norway

One of Sweden's commitments in the EU is to contribute to producing favorable conditions for electricity trade among member countries. That is another reason for needing to reinforce the grid between Skogssäter and Stenkullen, since this part of the grid is so weak that even in the normal mode it limits the possibility of electricity trading with southern Norway and Denmark.

Under EU rules, it is not permissible that internal weaknesses somewhere in a country's national grid have consequences for the free flow of commerce between countries. The new line is required for being able to meet today's electricity trading without physical limitations, so-called bottlenecks.

The proposed line will extend from Ale to Trollhättan

The new line is planned between a new substation in Ingelkärr in Ale municipality and the existing substation Stenkullen in Lerum municipality. This is a distance of approximately 20 km. The line will be built in the form of an overhead AC line – the same technology as the rest of the grid is based on. The plan is to take the line into operation in 2026.

The Grid will be strengthened from Ingelkärr further up to Skogssäter in a separate project

Svenska kraftnät submitted a concession application for a new 400 kV line between Skogssäter and Stenkullen in 2016. In 2019 was Svenska kraftnät denied passage through the national interest Bredfjället - Väktorområdet and decided due to this to continue with the southern part of the planned reinforcement, from Stenkullen up to Ingelkärr.

By strengthening the transmission grid between Stenkullen and Ingelkärr are several of the original project's most time-critical driving forces met. As Bredfjället - Väktorområdet is located in the northern part of the original stretch, the passability problem through national interest does not affect the time plan for Ingelkärr-Stenkullen.

What previously was the project Skogssäter-Stenkullen came instead to include the stretch Ingelkärr-Stenkullen. The reinforcement further up to station Skogssäter is still necessary and is being carried out in a new project which after new investigations started in 2022.
