Procurement of automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) from the start of the Automated Nordic mFRR Energy Activation Market (EAM)
The Nordic TSOs have decided to increase the procurement of aFRR at go-live of mFRR EAM.
The implementation of mFRR EAM implies many changes in requirements and procedures for balancing as well as start-up for use of many new operational IT-tools. This comprehensive change implies several risks for system security during the go-live period, and aFRR is an important measure to reduce the potential consequences of those risks and secure a safe transition to the new balancing model.
The main basis for the procurement is the agreed goal for frequency quality level.
Nordic aFRR volumes per hour
From Monday 3 March 2025, aFRR will be procured for all hours and all days of the week.
The total volume will be 500 MW for both upwards- and downwards balancing in all hours.
Possible changes in procurement
The TSOs evaluate and reassess the observed quality of balancing and risk mitigation continuously to have a safe transition to new balancing procedures. The TSOs will therefore consider to change the procurement volumes frequently and in minor steps (25-50 MW) in the first weeks after go-live.
Information about the procurement from early April will follow in March.
